International Women's Day: Celebrating the Resilience and Achievements of Women Around the World

International Women's Day, celebrated annually on March 8th, is a day dedicated to honouring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women and girls globally. The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) joins hands with communities around the world in recognizing the essential role that women play in shaping our world and driving positive change.

In the past couple of years, the world has witnessed the significant disparities that exist for women, particularly for those who are marginalized or face multiple forms of oppression. Muslim women have not been immune to this. An alarming increase in Islamophobia has amplified the challenges that many of them face.

However, despite these challenges, Muslim women continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience and perseverance, and CCMW is proud to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Muslim women across Canada. These women, in their varied roles as mothers, entrepreneurs, activists, community leaders, and more, are making a lasting impact on their communities and beyond.

This International Women's Day let’s stand together for women and girls around the world, particularly those in Afghanistan and Iran, where basic human rights to an education, work and mere survival are under attack.  With the struggle for reproductive rights south of the border and ongoing challenges for Muslim women and girls here in Canada, we cannot watch from the sidelines.  It doesn’t take long for basic rights and freedoms to be curtailed or taken away. Let us be vigilant and determined to stand in solidarity to advance the rights and interests of Muslim women and girls in Canada and globally, and to ensure that our voices are heard. Let us all take this day as an opportunity to celebrate the contributions of women and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing struggle for gender equality and justice for all. #EmbraceEquity
