Zakiyyah Alexander

Hi, I am Zakiyyah Alexander, Hair and Scalp Specialist, Kitchen Alchemist and Founder at Blumseed. I am a graduate of the International Academy of Design and Technology, a former Design Assistant to a famous Canadian Fashion Designer, and a student of naturopathy. I started making organic beauty products in 2004 and launched a hair care service in 2011 which eventually became Blumseed.

The inspiration for Blumseed comes from my grandparents who made livelihoods with their hands, a mother who displayed true pride in her natural beauty, and a father with an incessant need for melodic perfection.

They all inspired me to create a beauty line that is for me the essence of health and healing.

Blumseed exists to support the journey of women and men back to hair + skin love. We exist to create personalized hair and skin care products and experiences rooted in beauty and tradition. We believe that we have uniquely beautiful hair and skin deserving of indulgent beauty and the experience of beauty. Our products and services are about employing the best application of organic botanicals, oils, clays and Ayurvedic ingredients specifically selected. Ingredients to heal, nourish, rejuvenate and beautify from root to tip.

What have been the most rewarding aspects of your work so far?

The most rewarding aspect of my work is positively impacting the lives of my clients and hearing about their hair and skin transformation stories. Also the ability to do what I love as an Entrepreneur Everyday. It is my way of serving my lord, by helping my Sisters and Brothers Honour their outer beauty.

What have been some of the more challenging aspects?

Being an entreprenuer and being the main person to handle most of the day to day aspects of running my business was challenging. For example the financials, social media marketing, packaging, shipping orders, customer service and making products are some of the aspects that need to be accomplished for my business to run smoothly. Over this past year I have figured out how to fine tuned my internal process and hire out more support in areas that I am week and also get my family on board to support me as well.

Name a Black Muslim woman who has been an inspiration to you and why.

Bilqees Quick is a Black Muslim women who has been an inspiration to me because she has always been the one to bring muslim women together to support and lift each other up. It's because of her that I am part of a wonderful sisterhood filled with like minded muslim sisters like myself. It's a group where we discuss the things happening in our community, our lives and how we can be of service to our Lord. We get together often with our families and this is so impactful for our children to to see and experience. You really feel proud to be a muslim having someone like her leading the way.
