Idil Mussa is a Senior Reporter with CBC News in Toronto. Idil has a real passion for breaking news and has covered stories about education, labour, crime, race and health in bureaus across the country.
She started her career in St. John’s and made stops in Victoria and Ottawa before returning to Toronto to report from the city where she grew up.
Idil graduated from the University of Toronto with a bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies and Anthropology and has a Master of Arts degree in Journalism from Western University.

What have been the most rewarding aspects of your work so far?
The most rewarding aspect of being a journalist is getting to meet new people everyday and being trusted to tell their stories. It’s a privilege to have access to communities that are often overlooked and to share their experiences with Canadians.
What have been some of the more challenging aspects?
Some of the stories I cover require a lot of time and care. It’s not easy for people to share painful experiences and doing so can be traumatic. Having patience is key to being true to the story and the subject. It’s also important to be respectful of people’s boundaries when they say ‘no’.
Name a Black Muslim woman who has been an inspiration to you and why.
My mother. She’s strong, focused and caring. I admire her tremendously.
