WWI Honouree

Faduma Ahmed

Faduma has been working for UFCW Local 401 in Alberta since 2009. Immigrating from Africa, she was involved in social justice even before setting foot on Canadian soil as an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa. After working in a major beef plant in Brooks, Alberta, she joined UFCW Local 401 as an administrative assistant. Quickly, she fueled her activism by assisting members in the plant and grocery store within the broader Brooks community. In 2018, she was promoted to the role of Union Labour Relations Officer, where her passion for community engagement grew even stronger. Faduma has made significant strides in protecting the rights of temporary foreign workers, advocating for expeditious pathways to residency, and strengthening the collective power of workers who are not only new Canadians but also perform the essential work that Canadians rely on.

Faduma’s commitment to aiding workers and BIPOC individuals extended beyond the plant. Her community involvement in the city of Brooks and political efforts contributed to the election of the first black city councilor in 2021.

Currently, she resides with her family in Calgary, Alberta, where she now supports workers at another major beef plant in High River, Alberta.
