Flag Them Safe – Flag It, Stop It is a national initiative led by the Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) focused on preventing gun-related and gender-based violence through education, legal awareness, storytelling, and community engagement.
The project equips women, families, and communities with practical knowledge about recognizing warning signs of violence, understanding available legal protections, and accessing safety and support resources. Through accessible workshops, legal education materials, community partnerships, and an art and storytelling component, the initiative creates spaces for participants to learn about their rights and explore pathways to safety.
A key component of the project is increasing awareness of Canada’s “red flag” firearm safety measures and other legal remedies that may help address situations involving threats, violence, or concerns about firearm access. Participants learn about tools such as peace bonds, emergency protection measures, restraining orders, probation-related conditions, and firearm prohibition mechanisms, while also receiving information about safety planning and community-based supports.
The project brings together legal education and community knowledge to ensure that information is accessible, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and grounded in the experiences of women and families affected by gender-based violence.

Flag Them Safe - Red Flag Laws Workshop Series
Join us for a four-part, community-based workshop series focused on understanding gender-based violence, recognizing warning signs, accessing legal protections, developing safety plans, and connecting with community resources. Each session builds on the previous one and provides practical, accessible information in a supportive and trauma-informed environment. Participants will have opportunities to ask questions, learn about available supports, and develop greater confidence in recognizing risk and identifying pathways to safety.
Hannan Mohamud is a Canadian legal advocate, researcher, and policy strategist working at the intersection of criminal law, anti-Black racism, and international human rights. She is the current Legal Counsel & Policy Lead at CCMW, and holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in Common Law from the University of Ottawa, with a focus in criminal law and international human rights, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Alberta.
