“Injustice & Insight” is a compelling legal storytelling podcast that brings to life real cases, legal battles, and personal stories affecting Muslim Canadians. It will explore freedom of expression, hate crimes, anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, gendered Islamophobia, and more—all through expert analysis, firsthand accounts, and engaging storytelling.
Each episode will break down complex legal issues in plain language, featuring voices of lawyers, activists, scholars, and everyday people who have been directly impacted by these cases.
The goal? To empower listeners with knowledge, humanize legal struggles, and drive social change while ensuring legal education is accessible to all.
Meet Your Host - Hannan Mohamud
Hannan Mohamud is a Canadian legal advocate, researcher, and policy strategist working at the intersection of criminal law, anti-Black racism, and international human rights. She is the current Legal Counsel & Policy Lead at CCMW, and holds a Juris Doctor (J.D.) in Common Law from the University of Ottawa, with a focus in criminal law and international human rights, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Alberta.
Hannan was named one of Alberta’s Top 30 Under 30 for founding the groundbreaking Edmonton PodCast Is this for real which investigated racial bias, media and police accountability. She also was elected and served a two-year term on the Board of Governors at the University of Ottawa, where she successfully brought forward motions and consultations addressing the use of racial slurs—including the N-word—in academic settings and university-affiliated publications. And was a previous long-serving and founding Advisory Member of Kids Help Phone’s Rise Up Strategy for Black Youth, shaping culturally responsive mental health programs across Canada.
Hannan has collaborated with Professor Constance Backhouse on landmark research into racial bias and legal history, contributing to publications such as Carnal Crimes and the forthcoming legal analysis of R. v. S. (R.D.). She also leads national research on Islamophobia-related service gaps and outreach strategies through the Islamophobia Legal Assistance Hotline (ILAH)
in British Columbia.
Her written work and interviews have appeared in Refinery29, CBC Opinion, The Maple, LEAF Canada and Canadian Bar Association’s National Magazine among others. Her widely cited Refinery29 article, “Why Are Canadians Ignoring Hate Crimes Against Black Muslim Women?,” brought national attention to a series of targeted attacks against Black hijab-wearing women and the institutional failures that followed. Hannan has presented her research and policy work to the Prime Minister of Canada, the Governor General, and various United Nations diplomats.
