« Back to Chapters (Archived Material) This year our chapter has been involved in numerous activities. These activities have included not only our Muslim community but also the community at large. We attended churches, synagogues, and temples for various events. We also invited people of different faiths to our mosque in order to promote good relations and understanding, but most importantly to create awareness among non-Muslims about what Islam truly stands for. We are working towards countering some the misguided ideas about Islam that are held by some members of the public. In an effort to provide a helping hand to newcomers to Canada, we have been working with the Multicultural Network of Niagara Falls. This help includes the translation of different languages to English, assisting with cultural transition, providing transportation for such needs as doctors' appointments, searching for accommodation, assisting in obtaining gently used furniture, and other household items, etc. Our "After Jum'a Lunch Program" has reached its tenth year. Over this past year we have donated a substantial amount of money towards the upkeep of the mosque. This program has remained the main source of income for the Niagara Mosque. After many years of hard work and dedication we have been successful in getting the whole community involved in this program. With the help of the generous donations of the community, we are continuing to send the nonperishable food items to various food banks in the Niagara Region. Preparations are under way to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Islamic Society of Niagara Peninsula, which will be help on October 18, 2003. Our members are playing a major role in organizing this great event. The Islamic Society of Niagara Peninsula is one of the few Islamic communities where women do not complain of being treated unfairly. Three of our sisters are presently serving on the Board and the sisters in the community as a whole are the backbone of the society. Hasna Tayab
Niagara Falls - Annual Report 2002 In the past two years, our chapter has accomplished a great deal. Ongoing projects include our "After Jum'a Lunch" program, and Community Care. Our lunch program has reached its ninth year of success. Under the direction of Sisters Angela Valli and Sharifa Al-Harazi, the "Women to women kits" drive has been established to meet the needs of incoming refugee women. The kits consist of shampoo, deodorant, soap, sanitary napkins, body lotion, etc. We also participated in a toy drive to donate toys to refugee children in the area during Eid ul Adha. Afler September 11th, we attended a peace vigil in Niagara Falls. We also participated in the workshop, "Voices of Canadian Women" that was conducted by Samira Hussein on behalf of the CCMW National. We also held an interfaith social evening to which we invited women from many different religious and cultural backgrounds. Sister Lisa Aboaen spoke to the group about the role of women in Islam. Niagara Falls - Winter 2000 (March) In December 1999, Sister Angela Valli volunteered her time at the conference of Canadian Council For Refugees which took place in Niagara Falls. We have been distributing non-perishable food items to different food banks all over the Niagara region. This has been made possible by the generous donations of members of the Islamic society of Niagara Peninsula. This project has helped us to be known as active participants in the region. We have also been participating in the monthly community coffee hour. This gives us a chance to mingle with women of other faiths. We also attended a dinner which was organized by the Fort Eric Multicultural Women's alliance. That dinner was attended by about 65 ladies of different ethnic background and was a very enjoyable evening by any account. We have assisted Fort Erie Heritage Council to develop the volunteer policy. These volunteers helps the new comers to integrate in the Canadian society. Hasna Tayyeb Niagara Falls - Spring 1999 (May) The chapter is pleased to report that the 15th Annual National Conference held on October 17, 1998 in Niagara Falls was a major success. Many interesting and informative speeches were given by renowned scholars such as Mahnaz Afkhami, Parin Dossa, Amina Wadud and Laila al Marayati. We had pertinent workshops and then a successful auction conducted by Nadine Karachi Estrada. Our thanks to all our sisters and brothers for their generous donations, but more importantly, for their presence. I would especially like to thank the members of the local chapter whose hard work and dedication helped to make this conference a memorable event. Hasna Tayab Niagara Falls - Fall 1998 (September) Niagara Falls is hosting the National Conference for 1998.
