The Canadian Council of Muslim Women (CCMW) is inviting nominations for the 2008 Muslim “Women Who Inspire” awards. The initiative was launched last year in celebration of the council’s 25th anniversary.

A key objective of the initiative is to provide role models for girls and women and promote a positive image of Canadian Muslim women who have made a difference within or outside Canada.

Last year’s winners included, amongst others, a young Muslim-woman football player; an 86 year old great-grandmother of 19 who was declared a ‘global citizen’ by the United Nations; and a refugee from Somalia who is working to make Hamilton culturally sensitive, linguistically appropriate and free of racism and discrimination.

According to Salima Bhimani, one of last year’s winners, “I feel that it is integral that we create opportunities for engagement, opportunities for understanding. …I feel this is necessary within the Muslim Ummah and amongst Muslims and non-Muslims. CCMW is one place that is clearly doing this…”
